PKL’s A-Z of 2016: Part 2

Following on from Part 1, here’s Part 2 of our A-Z of 2016’s highlights at PKL!

J is for… Jamboree

Our events team work on a number of jamborees and large scale Scout and Guide camps each year, and this year was no exception. This summer we supplied a kitchen and coldroom to the Blair Atholl Jamborette, Scottish Scouting’s premier international camp, which took place in the grounds of Blair Castle in July. With over 1,000 participants, the kitchen was kept busy producing meals for the volunteer team.

K is for… Kung Fu Panda

This year saw the introduction of “Kung Fu Panda” – the newest kitchen to join our hire fleet! Each of our kitchens has its own unique name, and a staff vote resulted in the new unit’s name, thanks to its smart black and white exterior. Kung Fu Panda headed out on its first hire at the start of November, where it was used to keep the staff canteen running at an aerospace company during a 3-week refurbishment.

L is for… Lincoln’s Inn

We currently have a large scale, 19-unit open plan facility on site at Lincoln’s Inn, home to one of the world’s most prestigious professional bodies of judges and lawyers.  The facility will be on site during a year-long refurbishment project, and includes a kitchen and staff dining area, showers, toilets and changing rooms, an office, dry store and built-in coldrooms. The site has a number of listed buildings, so installation had to take these into account.

M is for… Memories

In November, Lynda celebrated 30 years of working at PKL –what an amazing milestone! With so many roles within the company and such a broad range of responsibilities, she’s actually transcended having a job title, and is simply “Lynda”! She’s been with the company right from the start and has seen it develop from a tiny company with big dreams to the industry-leading, international business it is now. If you ever need to know anything about the history of the company, or want to hear about the wild office parties of yesteryear, Lynda’s a mine of information!

N is for… NOEA Awards

We’re delighted to have been finalists in the Event Supplier of the Year category at this year’s NOEA Awards, and had a brilliant time at the NOEA convention and awards ceremony in November. We were nominated for our work supplying temporary kitchens and catering equipment for use at a number of outdoor events this year, including Glastonbury, Wilderness, Goodwood and the BBC Countryfile Live Show.

O is for… Oxford United Football Club

This year a new caterer was appointed at Oxford United Football Club to feed the players, and with no kitchen facility on site, they contacted us for help. The caterer worked with the team’s sports scientists to plan a menu to fulfil the team’s nutritional requirements, and one of our modular kitchens provided the ideal solution to enable the meals to be produced fresh on site. If you haven’t watched it yet, check out the video case study featuring the caterers, staff and players.

P is for… Power List

PKL Managing Director Lee Vines was named in the Catering Insight Power List 2016, in the Industry Innovators category. The list pays tribute to achievements across the industry. From the executives behind the most influential kitchen houses to the rising stars making their mark in the industry, the Power List sets out to be the ultimate record of the people helping to make the dealer and distributor market tick. Q is for… Quay

2016 has seen lots of changes down on our Quay, where kitchen units are fitted out before they head off on hire. As a result of an exciting refurbishment programme, a number of changes have been made, including a complete overhaul of our Refurb Bay, new storage areas, a new set of roller doors and yard resurfacing works.

R is for… Rio

In the summer we were delighted to receive an award from UKTI at a special reception in Rio for our work supplying the kitchen facilities for a major international event. We work on a number of international projects each year, via our Transworld and Major Events divisions, so it’s great for our hard work to be recognised. We also supplied a large kitchen facility to a mining camp in Mali earlier this year.
