Do I need separate cold rooms for chilled and frozen storage?
No. Every PKL cold room operates as either a fridge or a freezer across a temperature range of +10°C to -20°C, so a single unit covers chilled or frozen storage. Where you need chilled and frozen storage at the same time, cold rooms are hired singly or linked into a larger complex.
The temperature range is the same on all three formats. The 3.6m and 6.1m modular walk in cold rooms and the flat pack range each hold +10°C to -20°C, and every unit is supplied with food safe racking, four tier on the modular units, a heavy duty non-slip floor, a locking door and a chill curtain. Delivery and commissioning are included in every hire, so state the temperature your stored product requires when you request a quote.
How much storage does each cold room size hold?
The 3.6m modular walk in cold room measures 3.6m by 2.9m and holds up to about 20 cubic metres. The 6.1m modular unit measures 6.1m by 2.9m, holds up to about 40 cubic metres and carries 40 linear metres of food safe racking. Flat pack cold rooms are available in eight sizes.
Flat pack sizes run from 2.4m by 2.4m up to 2.4m by 12m, each 2.2m high, which allows the unit to be matched to the space available. Cold rooms are hired as single units or linked into a larger temporary kitchen hire complex.
What power supply does a cold room need?
A PKL cold room runs on a single phase electrical supply and needs no gas. The 3.6m and 6.1m modular walk in cold rooms each require a 32 amp single phase supply. The flat pack range requires 16 amp single phase. The supply is connected when PKL commissions the unit on site.
Where a site cannot provide the supply, PKL can arrange generators, along with water and waste where a wider temporary facility needs them. A site survey forms part of PKL’s turnkey service, alongside CAD design, project management, delivery and installation, and 24 hour technical support.
How quickly can a cold room be delivered?
There is no set lead time on a planned cold room installation, because it depends on the number of units hired. Emergencies are handled differently. PKL often provides a same day response to an emergency refrigeration requirement, and the emergency line is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Equipment is cleaned, tested and re-commissioned at PKL’s own preparation facility after every hire, which is what supports rapid dispatch. Mobile cold room hire to remote or temporary sites is delivered on the same basis, by lorry, UK wide. Where a kitchen has failed as well as its refrigeration, emergency kitchen hire covers both.
How much access space is needed to deliver a cold room?
A modular cold room is delivered on the back of a lorry, so the site needs sufficient access for a delivery vehicle to reach the siting position. Where vehicle access is restricted, the unit can be craned into place. Where neither route is available, a flat pack cold room is assembled on site instead.
A level hard standing surface is preferred, and units carry on board levelling where the ground is uneven. Additional steps and ramps are available on request. What happens if a cold room breaks down during a hire?
Every PKL cold room hire includes 24 hour technical support. If a unit develops a fault, the service line is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so the issue is logged immediately and PKL’s service team responds at the earliest opportunity. Where a replacement unit is needed, PKL often provides a same day response.

Is a PKL cold room suitable for HACCP compliant storage?
PKL cold rooms are designed for HACCP compliant cold storage. Each unit operates across +10°C to -20°C and is supplied with food safe racking, a heavy duty non-slip floor, a locking door and a chill curtain. A standard handover pack is provided with every hire.
The handover pack contains user guides for the unit and its appliances, troubleshooting and support material with service contact details, and compliance and safety documents including the relevant risk assessments, electrical safety certificates and compliance logs. PKL holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001:2018, along with CHAS, SAFEcontractor, Constructionline, F-Gas and CSCS, and supplies the public sector through the ESPO Modular Buildings Framework 953_22 and YPO.
