Working With Architects on Commercial Kitchen Projects

Architects regularly design commercial kitchens for clients who operate them every day, such as schools, hospitals, care homes and prisons, whether that means reconfiguring an existing kitchen into a new layout or designing a completely new facility. A commercial kitchen is a technical, heavily serviced space, and getting it right early avoids problems later in the build. PKL supports architects and their end clients across the whole of that work: designing and specifying the new permanent kitchen, keeping the client running through the build with temporary kitchen facilities, and delivering the permanent solution at handover.

How we Support Architects

PKL brings in-house design and specification capability alongside a full catering-facilities offer, so an architect has a single, experienced partner for the kitchen element of a scheme:

Production Kitchen 1

Temporary Kitchens and Catering Equipment

Keeps the clients catering operating during a refurbishment or rebuild, so the programme is not held up by the need to maintain a meal service.

For projects requiring a new or replacement kitchen facility to accommodate growing demand or an outgrown existing facility.

Design and specification support

Our design team produces CAD layouts as standard, with 3D renders on request, and provides the technical detail needed to specify and coordinate the kitchen within the wider building design, including services, ventilation, drainage and equipment schedules. Involving PKL early gives an architect a realistic, buildable kitchen specification, an accurate view of the space and services it needs, and a clear route to delivery, which reduces the risk of late redesign once the wider scheme is fixed.

Continuity during the build

Many kitchen projects happen on occupied sites that cannot stop serving meals. Where a client’s existing kitchen has to come out during the works, PKL supplies temporary kitchen hire alongside the programme so the client keeps operating throughout. Designing that continuity in from the outset removes one of the most common sources of delay and disruption on refurbishment schemes, and lets the main works proceed without the pressure of a live kitchen in the middle of them.

Permanent facilities at handover

Where the scheme calls for a new or replacement kitchen, PKL supplies permanent modular kitchens built off site to the agreed specification and installed with minimal disruption. Off-site construction gives predictable quality and programme, and the facility is delivered ready to commission, which suits schemes where the kitchen sits on the critical path.

Sectors we Work in

We work with architects across the sectors that rely on commercial catering, including education, healthcare, care homes, local authorities and prisons. That sector experience means we understand the compliance, hygiene and operational standards each setting demands, and can specify a kitchen that meets them.

A Complete Kitchen Solution

From concept to commissioning

Bringing PKL in early gives an architect a clear path from concept to a working kitchen. We begin with a site survey and the client’s operational brief, then produce CAD layouts and, on request, 3D renders so the design can be agreed with confidence. We coordinate the kitchen’s services, ventilation, drainage and equipment schedule with the wider building design, which reduces the risk of clashes and late change once the scheme is fixed. Where the client’s existing kitchen has to stay in use, we arrange temporary catering for the construction phase so the programme is not held back by the meal service. The permanent facility is then built off site to the agreed specification, delivered and installed to programme, and commissioned ready for handover. Because the same team carries the kitchen through survey, design, supply and installation, the design intent is preserved from drawing to delivery, and the architect has a single point of contact for the catering element from first sketch to sign-off.

A single partner through to handover

PKL delivers the catering facilities on a fully managed, turnkey basis, so an architect coordinates one supplier rather than several. We hold ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, along with CHAS, SAFEcontractor, Constructionline, Gas Safe and CSCS, and route public-sector schemes through compliant frameworks including ESPO and YPO. With a fleet of more than 600 kitchen units, over 15,000 facilities delivered and more than 35 years’ experience, we bring the scale and reliability to support projects of any size.

FAQs

  • 1

Can you work from our drawings and specification?

Yes. Our design team works to your drawings and the client’s requirements, producing CAD layouts as standard and 3D renders on request, along with the technical detail to coordinate the kitchen within the wider design.

  • 2

Can you keep the client operating during the build?

Yes. We supply temporary kitchens alongside the works so the client continues serving meals, then remove them once the permanent facility is ready.

  • 3

Do you provide both temporary and permanent facilities?

Yes. We cover the whole project, from temporary cover during the works to the permanent modular kitchen at handover.

  • 4

Can you support the services and ventilation design?

Yes. We provide the technical detail for services, ventilation, drainage and equipment so the kitchen coordinates cleanly with the wider building design.

  • 5

Do you work across different sectors?

Yes. We work with architects across education, healthcare, care homes, local authorities and the secure estate, to the standards each setting requires.
