Nestled in the heart of the Wye Valley, The Royal Lodge in Symonds Yat is a popular hotel, restaurant and wedding venue renowned for its scenic surroundings and hospitality offering. Catering plays a central role in the guest experience, serving hotel residents, restaurant customers and private events throughout the year.
In May, the hotel faced an unprecedented challenge when a devastating rock fall struck the property, causing extensive damage to its main kitchen. The incident destroyed the rear wall and roof of the kitchen, rendering the facility unsafe and forcing the hotel to temporarily close while emergency assessments were carried out.
With guests relocated and safety inspections underway, The Royal Lodge was under significant pressure to resume operations as quickly as possible. The urgency was heightened by a wedding reception for 90 guests scheduled just days later, alongside the need to continue serving resident guests and maintain business continuity.
The hotel required a temporary kitchen solution that could be deployed immediately, allowing catering operations to resume without compromising service standards. In addition to the demanding timeframe, the site presented considerable logistical challenges due to narrow access roads and restricted working space around the hotel.
Emergency Kitchen Delivered in 36 Hours
Following an urgent call on Tuesday afternoon, PKL mobilised its team to deliver and install a fully operational temporary kitchen rental solution within just 36 hours. Working in coordination with a generator supplier, PKL supplied a bespoke facility comprising dedicated areas for food preparation, cooking, and cold storage, providing all the essential infrastructure required to maintain catering operations.
Despite the complex site conditions and tight delivery schedule, the temporary facilities were successfully transported, positioned and commissioned on Thursday morning, enabling the hotel to reopen and prepare for the weekend’s commitments. The rapid deployment ensured that the scheduled wedding could proceed as planned and that guests continued to receive uninterrupted catering services.
Delivered as part of PKL’s fully managed rental service, the temporary kitchen solution included delivery, installation, ongoing maintenance support and flexible rental terms. This approach provided The Royal Lodge with an immediate, low-risk solution, allowing the business to continue trading while plans were developed to repair the permanent kitchen facility.
By combining rapid mobilisation, specialist logistics expertise and reliable temporary kitchen infrastructure, PKL helped The Royal Lodge maintain operations during a critical period, preventing significant disruption to both guests and revenue-generating activities.
Graham Howells, General Manager at The Royal Lodge, commented:
“I would certainly recommend PKL and have received great service from everybody so far. Renting was the only solution to enable us to reopen the business. Without a kitchen on site, we simply wouldn’t have been able to open and fulfil the requirements of many of our customers. The speed at which PKL responded and had everything operational was crucial in helping us continue serving our guests during a very difficult situation.”
