PKL’s Commonwealth Games Adventure Continues Supplying Temporary Kitchens

PKL is providing the kitchens for this month’s Commonwealth Games, and it’s just the latest international success the company has celebrated over the last year.

The games, held on the Gold Coast in Queensland, is the third major sports event PKL has provided with kitchen design, installation, project management and technical support services in the last year.

The great run started with the World University games in Taipei in July 2017, followed by the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang last month and now the company is working in Australia on its fifth Commonwealth Games.

At the Gold Coast Games, which opened on April 4th, caterers will use PKL temporary kitchens to produce food for 6,500 athletes and team officials, plus 2,000 on site staff. The kitchens which are operational 24-hours per day throughout the Games, will create up to 25,000 meals a day, featuring cuisine options from many of the 71 participating countries.

PKL has had a dedicated team in the country since October to receive delivery of the 1,000 pieces of equipment and to arrange and supervise installation. Now that the Games are underway, a team of PKL engineers is stationed at the Gold Coast maintaining equipment, attending to any problems, helping to train staff, and making sure the kitchens stay operational during the three week event.

The three successive events in the last few months follows on from the company’s achievements at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, the company’s fifth successive Summer Olympic Games.

International Director Peter Schad said that it was PKL’s British base and dedicated workforce that allowed it to compete for such large scale projects.

“We are a closely knit company and we choose our staff carefully,” he said. “Our team has huge experience of this kind of project, and we have worked hard to refine our design, equipment preparation, shipping, installation, maintenance and then breaking down the setup to a fine art. We’ve developed systems and techniques that help us provide the service these large events need, and we’ve built an enviable reputation for not letting our clients down.

“This is due to our specialist kitchen preparation facility in Cheltenham and our dedicated staff throughout the business. They are what allow us to compete on the world stage and to win these contracts.”
