HMP Blakenhurst

Temporary Kitchen for HMP Blakenhurst

HMP Blakenhurst needed to refurbish their catering facilities whilst not disrupting the normal day to day routine at the prison and still being able to feed the 1,200 inmates.

The design which seemed most appropriate was an open plan kitchen – this would provide a more comfortable working environment for both the inmates and staff. The comfortable working environment was achieved by  larger production areas, lighter conditions and improved airflow.

On top of this, communication and security was an important aspect to consider when designing the layout of the kitchen. This was achieved through the reduced number of doors and walls which created much better visibility. The suited locks on the doors also reduced risks as there were less time delays in selecting keys.

Throughout the 12 month hire, technical support was provided 24 hours a day and regular service visits and additional equipment training was carried out. Building skirts were used around the Portable Kitchens to prevent access under and between the units ensuring that all inmates were safe.

“The open plan kitchen developed with HM Prisons Catering Service is a major step forward in providing safe, secure and high performance facilities during kitchen rebuilding projects. I am personally very happy to be working alongside valued suppliers to develop the implementation of this new concept.”
