Commonwealth Games Temporary Kitchen & Dining for Athletes Village

Contracted to the Master Caterer, PKL supplied and installed the kitchen and dining foodservice equipment for the athletes’ dining facility. The choice of equipment to support the dietary requirements of the 71 competing nations was vital. With over 25,000 meals served per day throughout the Games, the quality and reliability of the facility was of the utmost importance. At 6,250m2, the main kitchen and dining hall was the largest ever built for a Commonwealth Games and had a seating capacity of 2,800.

Working closely with Planning and Infrastructure from the Master Caterers, PKL project managers oversaw the entire installation. This involved constant liaison with not just the Master Caterers, but also the Games operations staff and other major site contractors. As well as providing the hire of the foodservice equipment, PKL also provided the design and installation of electrical, plumbing and mechanical services and all in-ground drainage works. Additionally, PKL provided 24-hour maintenance cover during the Games, with specialist engineers based on site.

Following a post tender design development period, the on-site construction took just 3 months from March 2014 and the facility’s operational period was 6 weeks. This was a significant project that was successfully delivered on time and on budget to the highest standards.
