Taunton School, founded in 1847, is one of the country’s top independent schools, providing education for 3-18 year olds, including a well-respected international school. The institution is constantly looking to improve the experience of its students and visitors. As part of this drive, it wanted to build a new dining space and kitchen to better serve the needs of its students, staff and visitors.
For the ambitious and large scale project to take place, however, the kitchen’s temporary replacement needed to be installed and ready by July 1st 2019. The window for installation was very tight, with only a few days available to install the facility and make it fully operational. Not only this, but the installation would have to take place during one of the busiest times of the school year.
The school turned to PKL because the Cheltenham-based company had the ability to provide the equipment and facilities the school required and the operational expertise to pull off the complicated and time-critical installation.
Terry Harris, Estates manager for the school, said: “When you think of temporary kitchens, you think of PKL. It became clear very quickly that PKL had the expertise to help us provide the right kitchen facility and install it in a way that caused very little disruption to our school. The facility is perfect for our needs and does not impede our contractor for the main build of the new catering and dining facilities.”
Working with the school’s catering manager and estates manager, PKL’s design team created an open plan kitchen that allowed them to maintain a full menu. The compact design of 12 units including prep, production, dry / cold storage, and office space now provides up to 1,400 meals per day.
The installation, which took place over a few days, caused little disruption to the larger site and the facility’s compact design means it does not impede the work of the building contractors on site.
