Stewards Academy is an age 11–16 mixed secondary school with academy status in Harlow, Essex. Their aim as a school is to ensure that pupils have the necessary knowledge, skills and attributes to be highly successful, but also to contribute positively to society as well-rounded and respectful citizens.

Since its establishment in 1963, Stewards Academy has faced the challenge of limited catering space and needed to come up with a solution to help improve their existing catering facility. The primary challenge was the lengthy queues during their 35-minute lunch break – ensuring every student was served in such a tight timeframe was becoming impossible.

Inspired by Passmore Academy’s success with PKL’s Walk-In Food Cube, Stewards Academy explored this innovative solution which would allow them to have an enclosed service space. Upon visiting Passmore and witnessing the Food Cube’s impact firsthand, they knew it was the perfect fit for their school and approached PKL for support in bringing their vision to life.

PKL provided a 4.8m x 6m 2-bay Walk-in Food Cube, allowing students to step inside, select their desired food, make a payment, and leave, all within minutes. Conveniently located next to Steward Academy’s covered seating area, this facility ensures that students can effortlessly purchase food and drinks and enjoy them outdoors, regardless of the weather.

Andrew Saunders, Catering Manager at Stewards Academy, commented: “Working with PKL has been brilliant, from the crew that came to dig the footings, sitting down and planning out what we actually wanted, working out all the pros and cons, to ordering the unit – it was brilliant. I couldn’t fault the equipment, it’s bespoke and you get to pick what you want to go inside the unit. The delivery and order was very simple, it was done within a school holiday period’

Andrew went on to say, “The presence of the Food Cube has not only reduced the size of our queues, but has also increased every aspect of the catering department, and the enjoyment of the children, which is the priority”.

The introduction of the Food Cube has been transformative. Its strategic placement at the heart of the school’s communal area ensures easy access for all students. The Food Cube significantly reduced queues and created a smooth, rapid service that allowed students to be served within minutes.
