Opened in 1886, Mansfield College is one of the 38 colleges that make up the University of Oxford. Comprising approximately 50 academic staff and more than 200 students, the College is nestled near the picturesque University parks and River Cherwell.
With the decision made to extensively refurbish the 127 year old College, PKL was identified as a partner who could provide interim kitchen and dining facilities for the establishment while a new, permanent kitchen and cafeteria was developed.
Says Neil McCarthy, Catering Manager at Mansfield College: “We’ve embarked on a refurbishment programme which we anticipate will take up to 18 months. We chose to use our 19th century Gothic chapel as a temporary dining space and, with the expertise of the PKL team, the kitchen was connected seamlessly to the delicate structure.”
“The chefs are very pleased with the space and the equipment we have been provided with, and response from staff and students has been extremely positive. In fact, food spend actually increased during the academic year. We believe this is thanks to the outlay of the temporary dining hall which complements the stunning chapel beautifully.”
Concludes Neil: “Overall, we are delighted with the service we’ve received from PKL. They’ve been very good about attending the site to deal with any issue, no matter how small. In the early days and weeks, an engineer was with us several times a week to ensure the new premises worked well for us and to overcome any snagging. Once we settled in to our new surroundings it was easy to forget that it wasn’t permanent – it doesn’t feel like a temporary building at all.”
PKL Group is the UK’s leading supplier of temporary kitchens and commercial catering equipment for hire. The company has over 900 portable kitchen units, available for short or long-term rental, to provide catering facilities during refurbishments, events and emergencies.
