Built in 1937, Baden Powell Primary School situated in Cardiff and serving the inner-city community of Tremorfa admits children from aged 3 – 11 and welcomes over 330 pupils and 50 staff. Eligible for the Welsh Governments Free School Meal (FSM) roll-out which is aimed at making all primary school pupils in Wales entitled for FSM by 2024, Baden Powell has experienced a notable increase in pupils benefiting from this initiative, with over 60% of all students being eligible for this support currently.
With the current on-site school kitchen not being fit for purpose due to complications with historical subsidence, drainage, and ventilation, Baden Powell required a solution to fulfil the uptake in FSM immediately to ensure all pupils eligible for the roll-out were able to do so.
That’s where PKL and contractors ABM Catering, Richard Kavanagh Electrical Services, and Martin Taffetsauffer Building & Civil Engineering came in to help, with a temporary kitchen and dining facility being highlighted as the solution to ensure there was no disruption to feeding the pupils that had hot school lunches whilst the current on-site kitchen was being rebuilt.
Judith Gregory, Education Catering Business Manager at Cardiff Council and LACA Wales Regional Chair, recommended PKL to Ceri Gibbon, Headteacher at Baden Powell, having worked on similar projects at schools in Cardiff with PKL that had all gone seamlessly and in a short turn-around, which was vital for this project.
Ceri Gibbon commented: “The feedback has been extremely positive, the kitchen is clean, clear, bright and well laid out. Deliveries are direct to the storerooms, and everything is now organised and accessible. All previous issues have been resolved by the move into the PKL pod”.
Ceri went on to say: “It’s been fantastic from the beginning – well informed, prompt, safety conscious, and adaptable to the school needs. The contractors from all related companies including groundworks, electrical, gas supplies, and health and safety were wonderful and worked collaboratively from the outset. To build a kitchen and dining room from scratch with 300+ children under 10 and their families onsite was no mean feat – I cannot fault anything from start to finish!”.
PKL successfully delivered and installed a 12-bay kitchen and dining facility which took only 4-weeks from the initial call from Judith to the children sitting and eating their hot lunches in the new facility.
