In 2019, a large Camp Infrastructure Organisation contacted PKL for the design, construction, installation, and project management of a semi-permanent offsite constructed kitchen facility to support the German Bundeswehr deployment in Camp Castor, Gao, Mali.
The existing kitchen facility at Camp Castor was considered aged and insufficient for the number of people that required serving. As a result of this, the client reached out to PKL with the request to design and supply a fit-for-purpose replacement facility.
The project team chose to work with PKL due to their past experience with PKL in austere locations, including Bosnia, Kosovo, and Basra, and also due to PKL’s timely response to the Request for Information (RFI) proposal.
The kitchen, cold rooms, and dishwasher elements of the modular structure were prepared at PKL’s UK headquarters in Cheltenham and delivered to site ready for installation which took place in mid-November 2020, the remainder of the units were delivered in flat-pack form and built on site. Despite this project falling at the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, PKL’s project manager and installation team successfully installed the temporary kitchen facility consisting of 25 units in December 2020 allowing for over 5000 meals to be produced and served per day.
