Temporary Kitchens and Catering Facilities for Event Organisers

An event site rarely arrives with a kitchen on it. Whether you are running a sporting fixture, a food festival or a music festival, the catering infrastructure has to be designed, delivered, installed and connected before a single meal is served, and it has to come down again afterwards leaving the site as it was found.

PKL supplies that catering infrastructure. Event managers, operations directors, catering managers, production managers, and more, come to us for the kitchen units, cold rooms, refrigeration, catering equipment and marquee kitchens that turn a field, a car park or a paddock into a working catering operation. We supply more than 500 events a year across the UK and internationally, and we have been building temporary catering facilities for over 35 years.

What we Provide

Building a Complete Catering Operation On Site

Where an event has no catering infrastructure at all, PKL designs and builds it.

The scale is set by the event rather than by our product range. We support weekend events catering for a few hundred people, and events that run for a month and feed hundreds of thousands. Individual units are hired on their own or linked into a single large complex, so the same approach works for a county show and for a national festival.

The clearest illustration is Goodwood, where PKL worked alongside Lowe Rental across the Festival of Speed and Revival. That project brought together 15 temporary kitchens, 74 cold rooms, more than 200 refrigeration units and over 240 items of catering equipment, and supported more than 35,000 meals across four days.

At the other end of the range, we have supplied event kitchens and catering equipment for a Scout and Guide camp, and marquee kitchens where the catering operation sits inside the event’s own structure rather than in a separate compound.

Equipment and Refrigeration For Your Caterers

Where caterers are already appointed, what they need is a kitchen that works and the equipment to run it.

PKL holds a fleet of more than 600 temporary kitchen units and 55,000 items of catering equipment, so a specification can be built around the menu rather than around what happens to be available. Production and preparation kitchens, warewashing, dry stores, dining and servery units and temporary cafes are supplied individually or as a linked complex, alongside the full range of catering equipment and the refrigeration and cold storage that any working menu depends on.

Cold rooms are positioned close to the production areas that draw on them, and specified for the volume being held rather than the volume being cooked, which is what keeps a service running through a peak.

A Turnkey Event Offering

Every event site is different. PKL handles the catering infrastructure end to end, and can arrange most of what sits underneath it.

As standard, PKL provides delivery, installation, connection to services, testing, project management, on-call support during the event and removal afterwards. Where a site has no mains supply, we can also arrange generators, water and waste provision.

Where access, ground conditions or space make a standard delivery impractical, we can arrange craneage. Our own transport and installation teams carry out the work, rather than third parties, which is what makes a build window predictable.

Compliance and Support While the Event Runs

Compliance is what a safety officer signs off, and PKL provides the evidence for it.

PKL holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, together with CHAS, SAFEcontractor, Constructionline, Gas Safe and CSCS. Installation teams work to the site’s own arrangements, and we publish guidance on CDM compliance for event kitchens and on LPG gas bottle siting, both of which event organisers ask about regularly.

Support does not end at installation. PKL operates a 24-hour line, 365 days a year, and can often deliver replacement equipment the same day. For events where continuity through the running days matters most, we can also supply attending engineers who remain on site for the duration, so a fault is dealt with where it happens rather than after the service it affected.

Events We Have Supported

PKL delivered the catering infrastructure for the Goodwood Festival of Speed and Revival alongside Lowe Rental, supplied event kitchens and catering equipment for Cirque Lumiere, Bloomsbury Big Top, and supported The Association of Catering Excellence (ACE) event.

FAQs

  • 1

Can you build a kitchen on a site with no power, water or waste?

Yes. Most installations connect to power, water and waste, but where a site has none of these, PKL can arrange generators, a water supply and waste provision so the kitchen and servery still run.

  • 2

How quickly can you get to us?

For a planned event build, the lead time depends on the number of units and the design work involved, and we set it with you at survey. For a failure during an event, PKL runs a 24-hour line every day of the year and can often deliver replacement equipment the same day.

  • 3

How big an event can you supply?

Units link together into a single complex, so the range runs from weekend events catering for a few hundred people through to month-long events feeding hundreds of thousands.

  • 4

Do you supply catering staff or food?

No. PKL supplies the kitchens, the refrigeration and the catering equipment. Chefs, catering staff and food are provided by you or by your appointed caterer.

  • 5

What certificates and accreditations do you hold?

PKL holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001, along with CHAS, SAFEcontractor, Constructionline, Gas Safe and CSCS. Certification is provided as part of the handover pack for your event safety file.

  • 6

How long can we hire for?

There is no minimum hire period. The facility stays for as long as the event runs, whether that is a single weekend or a month-long programme.

  • 7

    When should we book?

Summer and Christmas are our peak seasons. Securing equipment early is the only way to guarantee the exact specification you want, so we recommend confirming as far ahead of the event as your programme allows.
