Temporary Kitchen at Hans Price Academy During Refurbishment

Weston-Super-Mare’s Hans Price Academy opened in 2011 on the site of the original 1950’s secondary school and is undergoing an on-going £14m programme of development and refurbishment. The 750 pupils continue their studies as the building work continues on site creating interesting logistical and operational challenges.

These challenges came to a head recently when contractor Willmott Dixon needed to demolish the old kitchen and dining facilities to make way for new buildings whilst ensuring pupils continued to receive a seamless school meals service.

To plug the gap, Willmott Dixon partnered with PKL to provide temporary kitchens, whilst moving seating to a new dining area able to accommodate 150 people. The temporary school meals service is provided in various sittings to accommodate all of the pupils at the school and will be removed once the new catering complex is competed.

Willmott Dixon’s project manager at Hans Price Academy explains: “We needed to create a temporary facility for continuity of service. PKL was the obvious choice for quality, service and value for money. They did it all, delivering the equipment and putting it in place. It was a complicated operation but everything went smoothly. The craning in of the temporary units was quite spectacular and caused some excitement amongst the pupils.”

“This site presents particular challenges as it continues to be a working school environment and we have to work around the pupils, ensuring their safety, so we stop work at break times and during outdoor activities, for example.”

The new two-storey Hans Price academy will cater for an additional 450 pupils, taking the total roll to 1,200. It will include open plan classrooms, a new theatre, art barn and exhibition space and an experimental science laboratory. The sports hall is being refurbished and the fitness suite upgraded. Local community residents will be able to use the facilities in the evenings.

The PKL Triton temporary kitchen provided to Hans Price Academy, is the largest standard unit in the PKL temporary kitchen fleet which caters for all eventualities from refurbishments, emergencies or events. The Triton links three units together to create a large, light and airy modern kitchen environment. PKL also supplies different sized preparation kitchens, coldrooms / dry storage facilities and warewashing units all of which are available to hire as standalone units or part of a larger temporary complex.
