High Ash was a primary school with a problem. Its kitchen and dining room had been removed in the 1970s leaving its pupils eating packed lunches at their desks.
The school’s governors recently set out an ambitious new vision for food within the school – built around hot school meals for all the children, cooked on site with locally sourced ingredients.
Through the perseverance of Governor Juliet Bennett, the guidance of the Children’s Food Trust and some help from PKL, the school secured funding for a kitchen and dining room.
After examining all of the available options, including a traditional brick build, the school governors decided that the best option for High Ash would be a PKL permanent KitchenPod. The modular solution provided the School with the most flexibility with design, the shortest installation time, ensured that there would be no disruption to lessons, and provided the best value for money.
PKL’s internal design team worked in close contact with the leadership team and governors to ensure the kitchen specification, colour scheme, and layout fulfilled the school’s needs. PKL’s design team created a package that not only met the needs of the teachers, children, the catering team and planning demands and but also remained within budget.
The kitchen and dining room was delivered during the October half term 2016 and was an instant success. Following the school’s vision, the catering team served meals that were enthusiastically welcomed by children and teachers alike.
The fresh menu inspired children to enjoy foods they would not previously have considered, and the new space had a great through flow, that made lunchtimes easier for staff to manage.
Kate Goodger, Associate Head Teacher and SENCO Coordinator, said: “PKL were great at helping us consider our needs and finalise the plans on the kitchen. They were very flexible and understood our needs thanks to their wide experience designing school catering facilities. This amazing kitchen and dining room has transformed how our children experience food.”
Louise Eaton, Head Teacher, said: “We’re delighted. PKL have been very good at every stage of the process. They helped with securing funding, have been very good on the advice they have given us on layout and equipment, and the installation was very straightforward. We are so pleased that the space is working so well – it flows so simply even at the busiest times, showing that PKL really understand kitchen and dining design.”
