Commonwealth Games 2002 The kitchen and dining hall in the Athletes Village of the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games produced the most meals of any temporary catering facility ever constructed in the UK. PKL supplied Portable Kitchens and catering equipment to make that possible. During the games, the facility was open 24 hours a day and served both athletes and officials with over 18,000 meals. The food production operation centred around nine open plan Portable Kitchen units, three of them being PKL's unique central island canopies. This layout was judged as the only way to provide the open plan cooking environment needed to cater for the huge numbers involved. The catering equipment supplied was from our standard equipment portfolio and specifically designed for large volume catering. Items included 24 grid combination ovens, 150 litre bratt pans, 250 litre boiling pans and upright mobile hot cupboards. In the dining hall, the equipment was similarly vast. 10 mobile canopies fitted with fire suppression systems, were extensively used within the dining areas to provide a safe environment within the tented structure. Standard hire fleet chargrills, chrome griddles and fryers were all used for live cooking theatre. This was complemented by over 60 hot, cold and ambient servery counters, again, all from the PKL hire fleet range.
