Frequently Asked Questions - Portable Kitchens

Q: Do you offer help in choosing a Portable Kitchen to suit my needs?
A: Yes. Cook, chill, regeneration, sous vide, traditional, bulk, you name it, we have designed kitchens incorporating just about every type of food production system. The kitchens can produce from 50 to 50,000 meals per day. Our experienced sales team will take you step by step through the process of hiring a Portable Kitchen from PKL and recommend the best kitchen to suit your needs and budget.

Q: Do you provide permanent Kitchens?
A: Yes. See our KitchenFM offer.

Q: Do you offer surveys of my proposed site?
A: Yes. We offer free site surveys to our clients and can also provide project management and specialist services. These are particularly suited to large and complex projects.

Q: Will you come to site and discuss our requirements?
A: Yes. A member of our sales team would be happy to come to site and discuss any requirements you may have.

Q: Can I hire a two-storey Portable Kitchen?
A: All of our Portable Kitchens are single storey. However, we are able to stack the kitchens up to 4 units high should your project require this. The finished installation will comply with all health and safety requirements.

Q: Are your Portable Kitchens on wheels?
A: No. Our Portable Kitchens are purposely designed and built buildings that fully comply with current building regulations, fire codes and EHO food hygiene legislation. They have legs that are extended and secured but do not come on wheels as they should not be moved once positioned into place.

Q: Do your units need planning permission?
A: Dependent on your site, you may require planning permission. We would advise that you discuss your intentions with your local planning authority.

Q: Is it possible to position a PKL Portable Kitchen indoors?
A: Yes. You can position a Portable Kitchen inside as long as health and safety requirements are met in regards to extraction of gases and ventilation. Whether your needs are short or long term, you could also consider a PKL Mobile Canopy. It is a self-contained extraction canopy system with all service connections and is easy to install into existing premises. Using flexible ductwork, all cooking fumes are ducted to outside areas with the minimum of disruption and cost.

Q: Can I put my own catering equipment in a PKL Portable Kitchen?
A: Yes. You can install your own catering equipment inside one of our units but we would ask that you discuss the items with our sales team to ensure that the unit has the correct services. For continuity of servicing, we would normally recommend that PKL contribute the prime catering equipment and that you supply small items such as those requiring a 13 amp electrical

Q: Do your Portable Kitchens comply with building and health and safety regulations?
A: Yes. All of our Portable units fully comply with current building regulations and health and safety legislation. They also comply with fire codes and EHO food hygiene legislation. To learn more about how our units comply, visit the Health and Safety section on this website.

Q: Can you supply all electric Portable Kitchens?
A: Yes. PKL can supply all electric units, which have been used in the past in exhibition halls and for longer term hires at power stations or oil rigs.

Q: Do your Portable Kitchens come with electrical certificates?
A: All our units are NICEIC (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting) checked and should you require any certificates we would be happy to provide them.

Q: Are your Portable Kitchens CORGI registered?
A: All of our engineers are CORGI registered and the relevant health and safety checks are undertaken prior to every hire.

Q: How do you off load PKL Portable Kitchens?
A: We can use a flatbed lorry to off load the Portable Kitchen. The jacklegs are lowered and then the lorry is driven out from underneath. Alternatively, we use a hiab lorry where the unit is craned straight into position.

Q: Can the Portable Kitchens be used on Greenfield sites?
A: Yes. PKL Portable Kitchens are designed specifically for use on Greenfield sites. The only connections required are water, waste, electricity and gas. LPG can be supplied directly by PKL. As far as water and waste is concerned, PKL can organize waste tanks, water bowsers and generators on your behalf or if you would prefer to organise this yourself, we can put you in touch with the correct contractors.

Q: Do I need to clean the Portable Kitchen before collection?
A: We ask that clients undertake a thorough clean of the unit prior to collection ensuring that it is returned in the same condition as when it was delivered. Our drivers will video the initial handover and condition of the kitchen to ensure that you have a clear record to check prior to collection.

Q: If I finish with my Portable Kitchen early, do I pay for the full length of the hire?
A: We would ask for full payment as a rule, based on the minimum contract originally negotiated. Although in extenuating circumstances we can discuss alternative arrangements.

Q: Can I buy the Portable Kitchens at the end of the hire?
A: Yes. You can purchase any of our units after the hire, however we do not lease purchase any of our catering equipment or Portable Kitchens.

Q: Do you hire restaurant facilities?
A: Yes. We can hire restaurant areas to suit your needs. Our sales team will be happy to discuss any requirements you may have.
